If you think you have a need for self-storage, but you've never rented a unit before, then you probably have some questions. You may be worried about the process of renting a storage unit because renting so many other things can be such a daunting experience. However, renting a storage unit is much easier than renting many other things. Here are some answers to questions some people have before renting a storage unit for the first time, that may help answer some of your own questions.

Aren't self-storage units all big?

Some people think all self-storage units are very large. However, there are also small units available. This means if you just need to store something like a few boxes or a single appliance or piece of furniture, you won't have to rent a unit that's much more than what you need. On the other hand, if you do need a very large unit at some point, they will be able to accommodate you there as well.

Do they run credit?

You may have an issue with needing to have your credit run. Maybe you know you don't have the best credit score. Or, you don't want to have your credit run because an additional inquiry can cause your score to lower. More great news about renting a self-storage unit is they generally don't run your credit.

Do you have to be approved to rent a self-storage unit?

As long as you are able to show a government-issued ID and you are able to pay the monthly rent, you will be able to rent a unit. There generally won't be any kind of background or reference checks, nor will there be a waiting period. There is just some easy paperwork where you fill in things like your contact information and sign that you agree to the terms and conditions. Once you have done this, and you pay for that first month's rent, you will be provided with the number of your unit and the code to access the gate.

Are you able to access your unit whenever you want?

You may have concerns about not being able to get to your things when you need them. More great news about self-storage units is most of the facilities allow renters to enter their units at any time. The main office will have set hours, but once you have rented your unit, you won't have to go through the main office, so this won't affect your access whatsoever.
